For two decades you optimized for one thing: a ranked list of blue links. That list still exists. But now an answer engine sits on top of it, reading your page and deciding whether to quote you, paraphrase you, or ignore you entirely.
What still works exactly like before?
Almost everything you already know. Crawlability, clean information architecture, and real topical depth still decide who ranks — and who gets cited.

Read the table as an addition, not a migration. Nothing in the left column stopped mattering. The right column is a second scorecard you're now also being marked on, which is roughly as welcome as a second tax return.
Does traditional ranking still matter if AI answers the question?
Yes — more than the doomers claim. Most AI answers are assembled from pages that already rank well. Being retrievable and being rankable are the same job wearing two hats.
The sites winning citations in 2026 aren't chasing a separate "AI algorithm." They were already clear, structured, and trustworthy — and then made their content one degree easier for a machine to quote.
Where the split does bite is query type. Simple informational lookups increasingly resolve in the answer box. Commercial, comparison, and high-consideration queries still send people to pages, because nobody hires an agency on the strength of a two-sentence summary.
Which pages should you restructure first?
The ones that already rank on page one or two. A page Google trusts is a page the retrieval layer already sees; restructuring it for extraction is the cheapest citation you'll ever buy.
Work in this order:
- Pages ranking 5–20 for a real query. They have relevance and need format, not authority.
- Money pages where a citation carries commercial weight.
- Definitional pages that answer "what is X" — the natural shape of an assistant prompt.
- Everything else, eventually.
Rewriting your whole archive on day one is the most common way this work stalls.
What does an AI SEO audit actually check?
Whether each section survives being ripped out of context. That's the whole test, and you can run it by hand.
For any page: read the first sentence under each heading on its own. Does it answer the heading? Does it name specific entities rather than categories? Could someone quote it with no surrounding paragraph and still be correct?
Then check the markup. Structured data should describe what the page actually is, with author and organization identity resolvable through sameAs links to real profiles.
Audit one high-value page this week: can you find a clean, self-contained answer under every heading? If a machine can't lift it in one paragraph, neither can a human skimming on mobile.
What should you stop doing?
Publishing volume for its own sake. Google's spam policies target scaled content abuse — pages produced primarily to manipulate rankings rather than help anyone.
The test isn't whether a machine helped write it. It's whether the output was reviewed, sourced, and worth someone's time. Unreviewed generation fails that test at volume, and at speed.
Also stop writing the throat-clearing introduction. Three paragraphs of context before the answer is a habit from an era when the reader had already committed to your page. The assistant hasn't committed to anything.

Is AI SEO a different skill set from traditional SEO?
No. It's the same discipline with an added output check: after writing for humans and search crawlers, confirm an answer engine can extract a clean, correct response from each section on its own. If you can already do technical SEO and write well, you can do this.
Will AI Overviews kill my organic traffic?
Some informational queries will lose clicks to the answer box, and that shift is real. Commercial, comparison, and high-consideration queries — where people still want to evaluate options before spending money — remain click-driven. Weight your effort toward queries where a summary can't finish the job.
Do I need special schema for AI SEO?
You need correct schema — Article, FAQPage and Breadcrumb at minimum. There is no secret "AI schema"; there is only structured data that accurately describes the page. Note that Google restricted FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health sites in 2023, so treat FAQPage as machine-readable structure rather than a rich-result play.
How long does it take to see citations from answer engines?
Longer than a ranking change and harder to attribute. Citations depend on the page being both retrievable and trusted, so a new domain waits on authority the same way it always did. Restructuring an established page that already ranks is where you see movement fastest.
Can I measure AI search visibility in Search Console?
Only partly. Search Console folds AI Overview impressions into your overall Search performance without isolating them, so you cannot separate that traffic cleanly. Most teams supplement it by periodically prompting the major assistants with their target questions and recording whether the brand appears.
Does this change anything for Naver or other non-Google engines?
